Kissing Cousins
SUMMARY
The visitor is invited to travel back in history to the time when the first European explorers came to Canada. These people discovered a wildlife similar, but different from the one in Europe. The resources seemed inexhaustible. The European botanists and zoologists brought back many specimens for studying. In fact, when the first European explorers set foot on the American continent, it triggered a chain reaction of transformations. Many plants and animals came from Europe and many were introduced in Europe, often without anybody knowing about it.
Did you know that the daisy came from Europe? So does the House Sparrow. Today in Eastern Canada, over seven bird species, three mammals and more than seven hundred and forty plants were introduced from Europe, mostly from France. Many species which are harmless in their country of origin, threaten native species in their adopted country.
